Ascension

One of the more spiritual beliefs in Taoism is the idea of what can happen to your "spirit-body" after death. Some believe that, if an adept meditates and strengthens the power of his soul, that his spirit will, upon death, escape his body through the crown of his head, ascending to the Heavens. There, after a set amount of time depending on the level of the adept's enlightenment, his spirit travels through the cosmos, witnessing all of creation in the distance of space like some sort of spiritual astronaut. Finally, when his journey is over, his spirit breaks into a myriad of pieces, scattered through creation back into the void of the Tao itself.

This is very interesting from a social standpoint, to me, as Taoism is very matriarchal. We worship women and feminine traits, and the strengthening and conditioning of the soul is often called "gestating the Divine Embryo" or "nurturing the Immortal Fetus", giving a lot of womb-envy imagery and symbolism to the idea.
